I theory you can download at 7 KBytes / sec
but you usually get something in the 5's

modem 5 KB/s
dsl 150 KB/s
cable 600 KB/s

so for example a 5 MB song takes about

15 minutes on dial up
<1 minute dsl
darn quick cable

While the theoretical speed for a 56k modem into a PRI b channel is the full 56k, there is a legal limitation that keeps it at 52k max.

56k means 56 Kilobits, there are 8 bits in a byte, so you will download at a maximum of 7KB/sec. You will probably never see this speed though because of various factors (line cleanliness, ISP, etc.). You will usually get between 3 and 5 KB/sec.

Dial up or DUN have at max 3-7 kbps but a DSL or broadband has more that 50 kbps as a bandwidth

on my pc it vaires form 33 kbs to 52kbs it depends on the fax modem you have the phone line you use and if there's cuts on it... and as the above answers it's 56 kilo bit per second

On this pc I'm on dial up and it's at 54.2. I have no problems with it.

56kbps, but you'll never each it. at best you might touch 48kbps (kilobits per second)
