A person of that age can't really be motivated externally to try for something as personal and improtant as a JOB. He has to realize that himself. Just make sure he doesn't get depressed and self-concious about being out of work. People go in a shell of their own, don't let this happen.

You should be a complete picture of optimism. No nagging. He should just see optimism and faith in the future from you. Give him some time to realize what has happened and take stock of the situation.

Remember that a man's job is his ULTIMATE symbol of self in the world so don't make hard and hurtful comments on it. Just be plain and simple supportive. Encourage him and don't change your "together behaviour". Soon enough he will bounce back.

Keep the faith. Giving up has always been the easiest thing to do, isn't it? If he's worth it, stand by him.

Being depressed is normal after losing a job, no matter what the reason. It is hard to go back out and try again. However, if nagging doesn't work, and encouragement doesn't work, suggest that getting another job will show the former bosses they were wrong about him. The best revenge is living well.

Have him write down everything he's ever wanted to do (even if it sounds silly or impossible) and then he can work on making something on the list come true. Ex. if he's always wanted to be a rock star, he can buy an instrument and practice playing, writing music, singing, etc.

The point is to get back up and do something. The longer he waits the harder it's going to get.

Good luck.

Well it's been only a month so trying to pressure him won't do much good. When it gets to two or three months then you might want to start nagging or with holding sex. Right now just keep trying to encourage him, maybe give him a hand looking. It's tough losing a job even if it's not your fault because there's that sense of failure. Just try keeping him looking and point out any job fairs or anything that might be going on. Just don't over do it where you seem less like helping and more like harping.
