Depends what type of zip file it is. Most people use WinZip to compress and extract zip files.
You can download it here:
http://www.download.com/3405-2250-5155091.html?part=dl-WinZip
Install WinZip.
There are different ways to extract the files. I believe that right clicking on the file and choosing to extract the file to a certain location is the easiest.
You could also just double click the file and click the button extract and choose a location to extract the files to. It is up to you.
If it has a file extension of .rar you may need to install winrar:
http://www.rarlabs.com/rar/wrar36b8.exe
This is the one I use because it is able to extract zip files also and the type of files I download are usually in the .rar extension.
I hope this helped.

Using Windows version lower to XP----then use winzip software
Windows XP has a default unzip option...click on the zipped file..right click that...say 'extract'.....specify the location and ur work is done.
Linux too has a default unzip option.

If you have Windows XP, that function is built in. If not, or you don't like it, try ALZip
