initially a network is just a computer conencted to another computer. In this setup the single wire between the two is the only way for these computers to "talk".

there are many network configurations with different possibilities.

The internet is configured in such a way that if part of the internet went 'down' the rest of the internet is still accessible, multiple paths exist to any site.

it is compared to the paths of a spider's web. any path cna break and still not hurt the web.
