We had this problem a few weeks ago. Now our pool is sparkling blue.
3 days to a blue pool:
1st day: Use the net to remove anything big. Sweep it. Shock it- let it sit for a day.
2nd: Add algaecide (this stuff is what gets rid of the blue/green). Let it sit for a few hours. Sweep the pool again (to clean any algae off the bottom. Even if it looks clean their is stuff you cannot see). Then added more algaecide. Then change out the pool filter. Let everything sit over night, with the filter running.
3rd: Our pool looked great at this point but we shocked it again just to be safe (I suggest the shock in swim stuff).

Blue pool!

We get this every year. It's algea. Trust me. Its algea.

First, try extra Shock, make sure you are using enough. If you can find the ones with the flock in it, use that.

If this doesn't help...flock the pool. Buy flockulent. I would almost skip the shock if the water is changing color, but you can try shock first. Use flock according to directions. It will pick up any algea in the pool and DROP IT to the bottom. It's neat, you will walk out tomorrow and see a TON of junk on the bottom of your pool. Then, vacuum. Wait another few hours (no one in the poo!!) and vac again. Then back to shock and clarifier.

Also, we switched to small chlorine tablets and a second floater...this has helped. They break down faster. Our levels are all perfect but chlorine tests low...this helped.

**Take a water sample to the best pool place you can find. They should give you a paper with a ton of numbers on it. If they only test three or four, like a home sample, you need a new pool place.

Good luck. Algea is a problem you need to handle right away because within a few days that pool will be murky dark green.

Take a sample of your water to the local pool supplies store. Leslie's Pools will test it for free.

Chlorine is only one of the several additives needed for a swimming pool. If you are only using chlorine, your problem should be easy to fix once your water is tested. Not cheap, just easy.

When is the last time you cleaned the pool filter? Needs to be cleaned regularly. And if you have any, ANY algae growing along the water's edge, you will need to remove this in order to have a good water pH balance.

Pool shock work very good as well. But, you can't go in it for a while because the chemicals are harmful.
