I don't think it is fair to paint Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Somalia all with the same brush. Iraq is its own story and I have no idea if regime-change and nation-building works. The other three are quite a different story.
The Taliban was able to take power and offer cover for Al Qaeda in Afghanistan precisely because there was no functioning government. Even pre-Soviet invasion the country was in a perpetual state of war with the warlords constantly sniping.
Haiti was in a similar situation. Jean Baptiste Aristide had been ousted even though he was the duly elected president and, right or wrong, needed to be reinserted to defeat the military coup d'etat.. Haiti has the dubious honor of being the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, and it is a shame we cannot do more for a neighbor with a common backyard.
Somalia is like Afghanistan and Haiti combined. Desperately poor and divided among warlords, it also bears the burden as a muslim border state. Kenya, its neighbor, is Christian, and border skirmishes have been occurring there since Kenyatta took power when Kenya achieved independence in the early 1960's. Throw in Ethiopia's aggressive stance and their proclivity to encroach on Somali territory, and it's no wonder the country is in a state of anarchy.

I may not have agreed with you 10 years ago, but I am going that way myself as of late. I am starting to think that the USA should not have such a world presence. Of course this would have to include aid from the USA which would destroy most of the countries and starve their people of the countries we prop up. There would have to be a very strong defense policy in the USA that would be final and brutal because the USA would no longer be able to effect things through aid and diplomacy, but I think everyone would be better in the end. Beginning to see the problem? Sometimes what makes the most sense is the hardest thing to do.

In the end Saddam would have died, in the meantime would you have been happy to stand aside and say "oh well never mind" when he killed men women and children for little or no reason.
I was once asked the question,
If I stood on a wall with other soldiers to defend a city against an army that I knew I could not win. When that army eventually stormed the city they would kill nearly everyone in it and we knew it would happen.
If the leader of that army approached the wall and said ' If you sacrifice 100 children to me I will pass by' would I do it?
Would I take 100 children and sacrifice them to save thousands of people?
My answer would be that I would rather die fighting than become what they would make me.
In the end you make the decision that you believe to be right and you have to live with the consequences.
Are they wrong or are they right.
I dont know

Well - you have have a slight point but then why does the rest of the world want the US to intervene with isreal and Hezzbollah conflict? Why are other countries asking us to convince Isreal to cease fire? Usually we get dragged into these other countries. The main problem is the religion of Islam. Poeple who belong to this cultish religion (muslims) think that all those who do not belong to islam are infidels and therefore should be killed. What do all the countries have in common you mentioned? Islam and muslims. They start war witgh our country by supporting terrorists so we are just responding in the only method we know how which is to go after the countries which support terrorists and harbor them. Get rid of islam, the world will be a better place.

Your question is rhetorical, and you have answered yourself. However, you fail to understand the geology of the areas. I work in an oil company in China and each of those areas have petroleum potentials...if you read the news, you will find that China has been making agreements in some of those areas. Each aggressive act on the part of America generates billions of dollars spent on the materials of war and goes in to someone's pocket in America....remember that Bell Helicopter was almost bankrupt before we escalated 'vertical assaults' in Vietnam. RMK-BJR (a subsidiary of Halliburton...was Dick Cheney involved?) made billions out of Vietnam. Some countries inspite of their present dictatorships should be left alone...let the people solve their own problems...they are simply not ready for the 'independence' we give them and they fall backward. A very wise man (though many don't agree) was Mao Tse Tung and his strong handedness...any other form of government would have failed in China...the people weren't ready for it...they had come from an empire to domination by the manchu, to Japanese occupation and a corrupt regime under Chiang Kai Shek and was still split into fiefdoms...but Mao's ideas worked and we can see China making progress daily.

americas call to make the world a democratic one is honorable, but i have to wonder if its justified. countries that america has entered and changed may not be better yet, but if that country holds steadfast it will be. you cant change the way people think overnight. and, we must realize that a democratic society in the east will not be the same as in the west. and, yes, there were bombings and killings before america got there. ask the kurds how many of them were killed just for being Kurdish. other countries were killing each other while going through civil wars and political coos. america helped, but at what cost to the local people. one has to ask, is it right to sacrifice a few for the good of many? as long as america is recognized as the world leader, it is their responsibility to aid developing countries and help them grow towards a more prosperous future, even if they go kicking and scratching. not pretty, but necessary for growth for countries under the thumbs of dictators and tyrants.

Its why the US is hated all over the world. We are not the global police. I could care less what is going on over there. If they want to be idiots let them be idiots. The US Gov. is only interested in what they can gain from thier country if we step in. And we have gained nothing but hate and terrorism from interfering. And lost lives of young kids who have been brain washed into thinking they are doing the right thing for their country. These are not their country the US is stay here and protect us. Dont go and fight someone elses war.

First off - it's not any more violent in these countries now that the US is involved. It was just as bad before. You just didn't hear about it in the western (liberal) media you subscribe to.
Secondly - what makes you think these other nations were better off before the US entered? What makes you think it's worse now? Your opinions are subjective and not founded in fact. In all likelihood, things are the same for these people now. Certainly no worse.
Sleep safely tonight. Your children (and someday your children's children...) will be safe, thanks to the GW Bush, the US armed forces, and our national policy of 'international interference'!

you question is among the sillier ones I've read here, you assume things are over in all these places and you list counties that had problems when clintax was president of the US. You mention hussein but fail to mention the 20,000 {or more} kurds he killed, are they better off dead? America can only open the door to freedom for the people of these counties, what they do with is their choice. did you fail to mention they're all Muslim counties on purpose also?
