The advertising makes them their money. The more people that listen the more money companies will pay to advertise. Gee Ivan its funny how your star has now turned into an answer.

Often because people tune into hear a certain DJ and some DJs drive away listeners (ya know...the controversial ones, the ones that piss off advertisers). Both forums making their money off of advertisting. And people are going to want to advertise with the radio/tv stations that draw the most listeners/viewers. Advertising can bring in big bucks (for example, look at the costs to run a commercial during the Super Bowl).

The better the show is the more people watch / listen. The advertisers would like to reach all the people that listen. the station charges the advertiser an amount to advertise (usually a lot) then the station makes money and can pay the DJ's

It is all about ad viewership/listenership. The more people see/hear ther ads, the greater the likelyhood that more people will take advantage of what the ad has to offer. The TV and Radio are governed by ratings books. These books provide the larger part of determining who to advertise with. The higher you are in the boks, the more viewers/listeners you can document, thus you charge accordingly for ad space. It really boils down to how the individual station rates in the local market. If you would like to find more information about how the rating system works and how integral it is to ad sales and broadcaster revenue, check out Arbitron. You can even sign up to provide a diary to them. They provide you with all the necessary info to list what TV or Radio station you listened to, the format, how long you listened, times tuning in/out, and a few personal questions regarding why you tuned in or out. I am not eligable because I work for ClearChannel Radio, but I hear it is fun to be a part of it.

The corporation usually earns money from the sales of advertisements. This works because if the DJ is popular, more people will listen to the show, and then they can charge more and sell more advertisements to companies to broadcast on the air. The same principle applies to television... shows like Desperate Housewives can charge much more for advertising than smaller shows.

In general - its all about the advertising dollars. Companies pay stations to air ads - the better/ more popular the programming at the time, the more a company will pay for the air time.
That's basic but should help I hope. Good luck!

its very simple - the dj or presenter is paid either a salary or a per event payment by the station
if its a commerical station then the station makes its income primarily from the sale of advertising time and possibly the creation of advertisements
if its a non-commercial station then the station gets its income from some other source such as government funding

Every time you switch on your radio it sends a signal to the station and they have a counter, at the end of each slot they reset the counter and then they tell the advertisers how many where listening and the get a dollar a person.

advertising revenue, if a radio station/TV station has a high percentage of the audience share advertisers are more willing to spend top dollar to advertise there in the hope that some audience members purchase their product - this money is used to pay the radio station personality their salary.

Ratings companies, like Nielson, make calls and find out how many are listening, by sanpling, and the more that listen, the more the stations commercials cost businesses. Also the more people of a certain age, income, education, etc.
