GBP is the code for British pound, the currency of the U.K. All currencies in world have three letters codes. These are decided by International Organization for Standardization's standard ISO 4217. Some of the other examples can be USD for the US dollar, AUD, for Australian dollars, CHF for Swiss franc, EUR for the euro, CAD for Canadian dollar etc.

Not only currencies but ISO 4217 also provides the codes for precious metals etc. These codes start with X, for example XAU is gold, XAG is silver, XPT is platinum and so on.
