Here is the path and it takes a long time. The US is now a top 20 or so team from one much father down on the list. Here is how it happend:

1. Kids got exposed and interested in the 1960s and 70s (Thats me) leagues were formed and kids played.

2. These kids grew up and continued to play and the numbers of kids playing continued to grow.

3. Fifa saw the $$ from the US population and award us a world cup.

3. The kids from the 60s and 70s had kids of their own that are now playing so you have two generations of players.

4. This is why for the first time ever the US is a decent team and the MLS is holding its own.

In all this you need some influx of money from rich soccer loving guys to fuel the national program and get a league started. But its is my belief that it takes the two generations of players to get things really moving.

you need to develop leagues at a grassroots level so you have young people who are gaining both skills and interest in the sport. over time, having good players will result in better teams at higher levels and create more fervor around it when big events like the world cup happen, which will drive even more youngsters into it. i would really like to see this happen, i think you should take on this endeavour, i will support you, email me and we can chat.
