We have been looking after their house whilst they have been away and when they have come back their house is infested downstairs. They came to my house to give us a gift and when they went i was letting our pet rabbit run around the living room and i seen something very small and black and long and am sure it moved. now i feel creepy at the thought as we have two young children too. I know they cant live on humans but just the thought makes me feel sick.

Fleas lay their eggs in carpet, not on pets or humans. When the flea hatches, it immediately looks for a host to jump on. If there are no pets in the house, they will jump on and feast on human flesh. They do not generally stay on humans and get transferred from one home to the next that way but one or two could have fallen off in your house. They probably jumped on the only pet you had (the rabbit) and that is where they are now. If you don't have cats or dogs though, the problem will immediately clear up because you don't have an environment condusive to their needs. If the problem persists, your rabbit became infested and you need Frontline from your vet. Put the rabbit outside when you douse him and the problem is over.

It is possible, take the rabbit out of the house and get Raid for crawling insects, spray the room and all the areas down stairs particularly the carpet. Close all windows and doors and leave the house for about an hour. When you get back, hoover all over and open all windows for an hour then let the rabbit back in. That should sort it. If you can, put a cats flea collar on your rabbit (if you cant get one for rabbits) and leave that on for a month and that should ensure he gets no fleas.

Fleas don't live on humans, but will cadge a lift. Chances are you do have the little blighters.

You will need to treat your rabbit - contact your vet who will probably recommend Frontline.

You will also have to treat your rooms - generally the one that your visitor was in as this will be the prime location for the fleas to lay their eggs.

They tend to go for carpets nearest the skirting boards, and dark crevices.

Get a flea treatment from your vet (will cost about £20). Don't go for the cheaper alternative in pet stores THEY DON'T work .

Follow the instructions on the can. If you still have a problem, you will need to call your local council and they will send somebody round to fumigate. This will probably cost unless you are on benefits.

Good luck

PS please don't put a collar on your rabbit - they are dangerous on cats as well as rabbits.

Animal fleas wont live on humans but they will bite them.

You need to get a spray from the vets for your carpets and the rabbit it is a different spray for each so don't mix them up. Follow the instruction to the letter, because this is the season for fleas.

They sure can... and will. Fleas jump on anything near them and are carried to other locations all of the time. And yes, they can live off of humans too... they bite.

What you're describing as smalll, black and long? doesn't sound like a flea though... they're about the size of a pinhead.

Oh yes, it's quite possible, and likely. You need to get your rabbit some flea medication and also, get some flea treatment for your home, just to prevent any further infestation. Take care of it ASAP or it will get WORSE.

Frontline is not for rabbits.
Just so anyone reading these answers will know.
There are wet wipes you can get at PetCo or PetSmart, in the cat section, that are safe to use on rabbits. However, frontline and other topical treatments are not recommended for pet rabbits.

Flea's can jump on you and you can transport them anywhere. Treat the rabbit for fleas and bomb your house.

Unfortunately yes, they jump on your clothes and can be transported to other areas....
A good idea is to spry your self before going in the house to avoid any fleas jumping and attaching themselves on your clothing...
