We have 5 mice, 2 rats, 4 gerbils, and iguana, a guniea pig, a bird, and fish none of which have stirred up his wheezing. We got the ferrets (who are adorable btw) yesterday evening and he spent most of last night wheezing, not too bad but bad enough to warrent the inhaler a few times. And why would the ferrets cause asthma to act up when none of the other furry/scaly/feathery pets have?

About the bedding, I use pine with the small animals and bought the recycled paper non smell for the ferrets. Cats do set him off and long haired dogs (hense why we dont have any though Id love to have a dog,) I am allegic to cats as well so animal allergies are in the family.

He could be allergic to ferrets in general maybe? What type of bedding do you use for your other animals, and what sort of litter for the ferret?

Ferrets have a much stronger, musky odour, but I don't think that alone could trigger asthma. Usually it's the pet dander, fur, or bedding that does it. Ferrets would be closer to a cat or dog because of size and their fur, and you didn't list any of those, so maybe that's it.

(Awesome about the mice and rats though, I have 12 mice and 2 rats myself)

It is possible, depending on the location of the ferrets to your son. You also said you had other furry creatures are the in tanks that can contoin their dander and how often does your son play with these critters, if their are in open wire cages, and large animals like a rabbit or guniea pig, and near your son alot then the ferrets might not have that big of reaction on him, if the other critters are mice and rats, in tanks, the dander is enclosed or at such a small amount that your son allergies don't flare up like they woud around a ferret, cat, or dog, then more then likley the little bundlies of energy are the culprits. I wish the best and if so please search wisely for a new ferret owner.

it sounds like it. ferrits sent is stronger than sone other small pets, this may be why its affecting him, also it may be the fur as you have so many pets.
i would get rid of the ferrets as it may make his condition get worse.
