Maintain and attitude of position and respect. Your position as the instructor/teacher is a professional courtesy. They should respect you for that.
Treat every student with the same respect. Be polite and courteous to each one, but do not try to be their friend.
Let them know the requirements for grading and credits the first day, and follow the guidelines yourself. Fill each period with instruction of some kind.
Do not stop early. Make you class seem to be the most important class they take and make them hate to miss a day.

Consistancy. Respect is earned from the students. There is always going to be some degree of levity and showmanship, but a strong presence with tht consistancy in how the discipline is maintainsed will go a long way.
College will not be as bad as HS, as there is always someone who shows off for his peers.

Consistency is the key. Your students will respect you more if you are consistent and have set standards before they enter your class.Tell them what you expect, treat them with respect and keep your word. That will take you farther with the students and they will respect you for it. Also, with high school students you have to be willing to show them you are there for them and will go out on a limb for them at times. Most times they just need to feel supported from someone, especially if they are not getting it from home.

Set your rules at the beginning of the year like for instance ..(if you are not in your seat by the time the second bell rings your late)to be ready to work with book and supplies.. (all homework will be turned in at the beginning of class) ..this is a listening excersise...( tell them that one of your pet peeves is for them is not to respect one another verbally and physically). (meaning touching or putting each other down infront of you tell you will not tolerate it..)......show consistency...ALWAYS..... and make it fun..
There should be no sharing of homework.. individual work is stressed in your class..cheating is a major affair..but all these need to be set at the very beginning because if not ..you will pay..the key to running a classroom is Organization..and Teacher student rapport.. and I know that last one it is hard..but it will make your life so much easier...but we are all parents at heart...good luck..

well treat them like adults, and if they misbehave give them extra homework or move an assignment due date sooner. take some of their privileges away. they will learn from their mistakes and hopefully learn that they need to behave like civilized people.
