The answer to your question is yes. But why would you want to install two instances of the same OS?
If your worried about crashes it would be better to install a different version of windows. and a tip. Install XP on a NTFS partition but keep data that you don't want to lose on a FAT32 partition.
I have had problems with NTFS partitions becoming unstable and the only way I could recover that data was by using KNOPPIX which if you don't know what that is. It is a Linux based OS that can be run complete from a CD

if your speaking approximately records like be conscious documents, jpeg, avi, mp3. those should not be affected whilst re-installation an OS. besides the undeniable fact that it could be good to make a back up replica of all the records which you're extraordinarily afraid to lost.. lose.. loose! (there!) before doing all your super thought of putting in a real homestead windows. Its no longer that homestead windows will crash once you do the re-installation, its the laptop and Hardware units and different courses you utilize that should reason you some problems and forestalls you to apply it once you end the job. Reformating your HD before installation your authentic homestead windows is plenty extra clever than basically overwriting your unlawful version. in case you are trying this be optimistic to have all gadget drivers and alertness Installers which you need to re-prepare additionally and be sure you be responsive to a thank you to place in it back. this is all i'm able to assert approximately XP, approximately Vista? I prepare XP to apply there's a good link under to steer you on a thank you to place in XP, it is fairly common. basically study on, carry on with it step via step. good luck
