many areas of the UK still have rag and bone men. but to the other answer where they said they use vans. well i went to Bradford UK few months ago and saw a rag and bone man with a horse and carriage and they operate in poor areas. they tend to be old men that use horse and carts whilst young men use the big white vans. hope this answers your question...

They went the way of the umbrella repairmen, scissors sharpeners, door-to-door salesmen. You won't see people like this anymore because society has changed to the point where there is no longer any need for them. Why pay for umbrella repair when you can throw away the broken one & buy a new one for $2.00? No one collects rags to make rugs or sew quilts anymore; so no need for a rag & bone man. Sad but true, life & times have changed.
