If you don't have an electric tuner, get one. They are cheap, work great, and you're guitar will never be out of tune again.

Your best approach is buy a $20 tuner at a music store. Usually, they are LED tuners using red, amber, and green lights to signify when the string is up to pitch.

Your ears can fool you in the tuning process until you've used a tuner a while. The best tuner is called a strobe tuner--the strings are brought to pitch by a small light positioned under the appropriate string, but they're hard to find now.

You can also tune to a piano if one is nearby. If you know the names of the strings and the approximate pitch they should be in, you can match tunings with the keyboard.

If you can simply retain the pitch of just one string in your head you can then tune the rest by the fifth and fourth-fret method as shown in all guitar books.

Good luck. An out-of-tune guitar is bad on all ears.
