go to your local try to get a book CCNA for dummies or a similar subject on cisco routers, I don't know if you will get that information off the cisco web site with out doing a course as the are not an open sourse as such, (i can't think of the jargon to explain this). I did do the cnap course.

turn it on - connect a rollover cable to the chassis - from your terminal emulator - get into the command line interface - in the user exec mode, which looks like this > type enable - the mode will change to priviledge exec which looks like this # - give the machine a host name - set passwords -.........
thats the basic
you must know your machine's exact model so that you know what the machine can do for you. like 2510 or 2520 these are all 2500 series routers from cisco systems.

next what do you want the router to do for you ?
all these question must be clear to you.
thanks for your question.
my pleasure.
