I believe current catholic catechism considers it a sin. I don't know that there's very good biblical backing for that, however.
For a long time, the story of Onan was used to show masturabation was wrong. Onanism thus means 'masturbation'. When the story took place, it was considered proper for the brother of a deceased man to impregnate his brother's widow if she had no children, so that she would have children to care for her in old age. Well, Onan did not impregnate his sister in law, he 'spilled his seed'. It is fairly clear that he was not masturbating - he was sleeping with his sister in law, then pulling out so she wouldn't get pregnant and they could continue having sex. That would be sinful ...
So masturbation is considered wrong by the catholic church still, I believe, but accepted by many others. Its not exactly encouraged, but tolerated in any case as much better then premarital or extramarital relations.

Personally, I don't think that it is a sin. I don't understand why it would be- there's nothing really wrong about it. I guess it just depends on your interpretation of "right" and "wrong". But people masturbate because it feels good, and it's an alternative to sex, where there's no risk of getting pregnant. Studies have shown that most people are sexually pleasured more by masturbation than by vaginal intercourse. If you want to learn more, visit www.healthystrokes.com : )

According to several religions it is a sin. Is it wrong? I can't imagine why. It hurts no one and wastes nothing that is not naturally replaced. It doesn't even diminish sex drive. We do it because it's pleasurable and sates urges we often cannot otherwise satisfy. Go ahead, and don't feel guilty. People commit rape and murder, I think the mastubators are safe.

I never heard of it being a sin. Yet at the same time, I'm sure you'll read on here it is because SOMEONE WILL interpret something in the Bible to be masturbation and how it is wrong (even if it's not relating to the same thing).
JUST READ BEKKA'S ANSWER --- ASK HER TO QUOTE FROM THE BIBLE WHERE IT IS A SIN.

Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."
Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.
Masturbation is contrary to the human dignity of the person and anyone about whom the person has lustful thoughts, and the dignity of human sexuality.
With love in Christ.

It depends on what your religious beliefs say. I think there are a great deal of worse things to be doing like getting pregnant or getting a STD. I think masturbation is the ultimate form of safe sex. If I had a teenager I would rather he or she did that than messed around with people that could hurt their emotional and physical health.

yes, it is. the excretion of sperm should only occur during sex between married couple. Masterbation is giving in to an evil temptation.

Nope. Its normal and natural. You should figure out what your body likes so when you find some one you want to be with you can both enjoy yourselves.
we do it because it feels nice and our sexual drive.
