Both space and energy.
In the human (and others) brain there are connections called synapses that form and decay or are lost through non use. These connections between the brain segments seem to rely on use to remain and stay healthy. The number of them seem to contribute to the owners overall intelligence.
The best example I can think of are the bible users when preaching. They remember statements, chapters and verses because they use them a lot.
Dreams come by random occurrences of the mind resting but in contact with memories. Probably using memory to make up interesting stories to amuse itself while off duty.
Though unhealthy, there are some who do not sleep.

Human memory is chemically stored, so it occupies a biological space. Dreams are the result of the mind giving the sub-conscience something to do while it sorts, categorizes, and stores data learned during the day. When awake, you are absorbing 10 megabytes of data, per second, mostly through you eyes. At night, and only at night or under similar conditions, is when the brain moves everything from temporary memory, similar to DRam in your computer, to your brain's hard-drive. You can can store 10,000 years of data, which means that is how long you should be living.

Memory is held in the neurons in your brain so it does take up space and enegy but not a huge amount as you have millions and millions of neurons
Dreams come from your subconcious mind - neurons again - the way in which memories get transferred from your concious to subconcious mind I do not know as I am not an expert but they must move accross - I think this is the difference between short term and long term memory.
Nothing cosmic about it - its all in the brain.

Human memory occupies space and uses energy. The space is the innerspace of the brain; - the hippocampus, amygdala, - temporal lobes. Each memory consists of a specifically connedted 'neural network', which needs energy to activate itself.

the answer is yes all memor is stored in trillions of cells that perfom different functions. therefore for this more to be retrieved and kept requires energy. Human brain is complex and dreams come up as if the muscle is releaving itself of pain. or download its luggage at night or when your mind is relaxed for that matter. during activity you brains keep alot;
Imagine this ................
to open the eye lids your mind perfoms a function
to open the mouth
to make a step
to talk
to answer
to pick a phone
to make you heart beat
imagine all those activities.................
all need space and energy
good luck on your quest

neurons hold & transmit electricity.neurons are the electric lines in your body. in your higher brain, the lines configure themselves to record memories. alzheimerites get plaque buildup in the higher brain which blocks the established memory paths & confuses them. eventually if the plaque grows they are quite braindead in the higher brain. the lower brain, at the center & on top of the spine, functions fine so they can still eat & do basic functions.
when you dream, your body still has electricity in it which discharges into your brain. it is a mild energy compared to what you get when all your senses are active so brain secretes a chemical similar to LSD which amplifies the mild signal & creates dreams mostly thru the better developed lines of experience in your brain. so if experience a shocking event, even a scary movie, likely u are to revisit it in your dreams afterwards.

I find that the aliens are responsible for most things.. If it was not for the aliens we would have much more moon dust. They trade the dust in the outer sector for bing bong . This is a form of bubble bath that when emerged into it turns your eyes green. Good stuff for aliens I have been informed!.....
