Hail Pete!!

Pete Doherty is more of a lyrical genius then a god, Okay he does not write much without being under the influence but then again look back at some of the great bands of the 60/70's who where so off there nut, that they made the likes of Doherty & Barrat look like amatuers.

Take away the drug problem and you have a very talented songwriter, anyone who has listened to the Lyrics on either of the Libertines albums, or the current Babyshambles album will get an appreciation of his skills.

Perhaps more of a modern day Dylan then anything else.

Take away the drugs, take away the talent - I dont think so, they are probably more of a confidence drug then anything else. And as for the Moss incident well just think of the publicity that they have both received from this. Dont forget that it is a Marketing world, and the pair of them are very bankable on the marketing front.

No..more of a musical novelty. The flawed genius bit has been done before and he's not brought much to the table by way of new creative innovation. There's not been many people on the planet who can claim that 'God 'status'. For me.. you'd have to be completely original in creating new musical expression, radically influence mainstream popular culture, take your talent beyond the limits previously attained by others, and be acknowledged by your contemporaries as 'unique' in your own life time. Some of these classical composers were writing /performing concertos by the time they were 10 years old. Pete was probably still 'colouring in' with crayons and felt tips, like the rest of us at hat age. Syd Barrett's already been where Pete's exploring personally, musically..and is in a long que behind many other more creative talents. An enigmatic and provocative creative force maybe..but no God!!

Quote from today's NME sums it up better than I can, in reviewing their performance at Benecassim....'Having so often hoped that Babyshambles' songs would turn out to be quite good if Pete could play them properly, the uncomfortable truth is that when he actually does, they're still sh*t.' Carl Barat was the talent in the Libertines, and DPT shows that even that talent was stretched a bit thin.....

A crappy band, taken from obscurity and thrown into the spotlight by the British music industry desperate to try and make a British version of the Strokes, with the cost being the life of a weak willed and naive young man.
