There are certain individuals in the computer industry who, while they are brilliant in their programming skills, still don't feel like they have truly mastered things until they have proven their ability to destroy it.
Call it an inferiority complex or whatever, but if they would utilize those abilities that are wasted in creating an item of destruction and use them for good purposes, imagine where we'd all be now.
What makes the whole situation extremely frustrating though is that when these folks are caught, and they will get caught eventually, rather than getting the prosecution they so richly deserve they are mollycoddled, put into some low-security prison and bide their time. Then upon their release they hit the circuit and give lectures to corporations on how to beef-up their systems against others just like themselves. For this many of them are paid handsomely.

According to Microsoft Security it is done, mostly, by middle and late teen boys who are bored and have a severe anger problem towards their parents.
With most families having two working parents these teens come home to empty houses. Along with many parents also leaving them alone while the persue their social lives, these boys boys build a strong anger towards their parents and adults in general. Infecting computers is a way for them to get even with adults. Most infection are done through file transfers to other teens who want that cool song or movie for free. They also find poorly protected or non-protected web site and introduce the viruses there. Then tell all their friends about the cool web site the found.
So by infecting their friends computers they get some sense of satisfaction they are getting even with their parents. Some are actually hoping they will be caught so they will, finally, get attention from their parents.
Do they write the viruses? No. They purchase them ( with the excessive amounts of money their parents give them to relieve their own guilt) from blackmarket sites, and also pass them around to each other. Microsoft has found major networking among these teens around the country. They have found chat rooms and other forums where these kid network and brag about their exploits. This is why many are being tracked down and prosecuted.

Get an mad scientist for an example.
Like scientists, hackers and computer pros try their best to master their computer literacy skills. They try to do good things to show their best, but sometimes their stuff are not always appreciated.
SO they turn good things around and do bad stuff like hacking, keylogging, phising, faking and other cyber crime and creating viruses. They steal money in order to have their cyber crimes rose up, up, up.
That's the case why there are more bad hackers than good hackers.
Anyway, the question of hacking "fun" is nonsense. There is no fun that you can get in hacking. When you get a virus you can always fix it.
HAckers don't get fun by hacking. If you were the hacker, would you have fun when you are accused of illegal cyber crimes?

a few years ago it was common for a virus to be used to attack home users - but as your question implies, it was ultimately pointless and not a lot of fun
nowadays viruses are used to target specific organisations in order to extort money from them and it is rare for these viruses to spill over into the general public

i dont know, viruses are so dumb and to think that people find fun in destroying other people's computers. i think if people weren't trying to hack their way into another's business plan or something we wouldnt have to worry about wasting our money on virus protection... but then again it always comes down to money.

I have often wondered that myself. And I have come to the conclusion that besides the sick minded, some are paid by the repair industry.
It could also be Satanic, as he gets his kicks from destruction.

some virus', copy your entire address book and send that info to the virus maker.
so the virus maker has this huge database of valid email addresses.
which he can sell.
so its not all fun and games, they make money at it too.
