be careful, I have spent the last 15 years researching this subject, it leads you in all kinds of weird areas, but if you REALLY want to know, an excellent starting point is Dr Steven Greer's disclosure project.

Electromagnetics is the answer as the first answer states, I spent many years on and off looking at the phenomenon. There are a few good books that have got to the bottom of it. Basically electromagnetic phenomena (masts, pylons, certain naturally occuring lightening - as yet unidentified by science) affects the human brain, allowing the unconcious to produce visions and experiences that are effectively the same for everyone (see Carl Jung Archetypes and the Universal Unconscious).
At first glance it doesn't seem like the best hypothesis but after looking at case after case I can see that the theory works beautifully. I wish I could remember the names of some of the books or authors but it has been a while since I last read anything - so confident am I that I now know the answer. I'm sure you will have a lot of questions about such an argument but there really is no space to go into it all here, I hope you can find the stuff I am talking about. The British Ministry of Defence issued a statement along the same lines last year - you might find that on-line quite easily, I couldn't though!

People have seen UFO's remember UFO does not mean a flying saucer or alien ship just an Unidentified Flying Object such as test aircraft, weather ballons, atmospheric abnormalities etc.
UFO's have been seen on several occasions by Astronauts and given the term " Unidentified " If NASA can't tell what they are then nobody else will be able to either.
Given the distances Alien craft would have to travel I don't see why they would then not make the effort to appear to the world quite openly or indeed be visible at all, we after all have been developing Stealth since the early sixties & even before and I see no reason why if visitors are trying to keep their existance a secret why they would not do the same?

A UFO or unidentified flying object is any real or apparent flying object which remains unidentified after investigation.
The UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek described a UFO as "the reported perception of an object or light seen in the sky or upon the land the appearance, trajectory, and general dynamic and luminescent behaviour of which do not suggest a logical, conventional explanation and which is not only mystifying to the original percipients but remains unidentified after close scrutiny of all available evidence by persons who are technically capable of making a common sense identification, if one is possible."
Some people believe UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft, but most scientists and academics say there is no compelling evidence to support such a conclusion. Such skeptical attitudes adhere to a standard of research attributed to Carl Sagan that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". As a result, claims that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft are generally dismissed through lack of evidence.

There are lots of resources on the web about UFOs. The disclosure project is a good website to visit. Basically they say that the military has made contact with UFO and alien beings decades ago.
It is hidden from the public for fear of how such information might destabilise society.

Whoa! ¿¡Useful!? That implies a purpose and you don't say what is your purpose.
Guessing, if you wan to:
Live safely without fear of aliens: Read Carl Sagan, become an unbeliever, they never see of get abducted by aliens, they don't even see ghosts of have paranormal experiences. (Go figure)
Marvel at alien presence and technology (true or false): Read some books, begin with "Return of the Gods" of Von Daniken and go on from there, He is a classic, he actually found evidence for his claims, unfortunately almost everything has gotten other explanations over time.
Gain some money: With a little cunning, study and a lot of skill you can make all kind of scams (if you are alien from a UFO you could sell the real thing), try researching past hoaxes and improve on them.

I have read some very interesting books on the subject. I can't remember the titles and authors because I am at work and they are at home, but books are a good starting point with any subject.
