Liz, one of the reasons that France is not aggressively fighting the Terrorist is that they are convinced that the invasion of Iraq is a grab for the oil resources. After the first world war, with the assistance of Great Britain, they sliced up the Middle East to secure oil supplies for Europe. They believe our push into Iraq is the same thing. Second, and I think more importantly, is that neither Franc of Spain have a large male population of fighting age. Unlike the US which boomed after WW II, Europe struggled to rebuild, they had less of a population explosion, and they have been at a population decrease since then. They simply do not have the fighting force in manpower to be involved in expeditionary forces. If you pay close attention to what they are doing within their nations, however, you will note that they are addressing the issue at home. If you want to call that letting us do their dirty work fine, but they don't have the man power.

Because fighting terrorists makes the problem about a hundred times worse. Each bomb dropped in a Muslim country potentially creates a new Bin Laden.

Has it occurred to anyone that if we stopped meddling in the affairs of Muslim countries they might just leave us alone??

Is my country, Britain, safer by having troops in Iraq? I think 7/7 answered that.

The next terrorist attack on the US will likely come from alienated America Muslims not from foreign nationals. Just look at what happened in London, all the suicide bombers were English and had no foreign support.

How will Bush, et al, combat that? Internment camps for all Arabs and Muslims?

These terrorists are not nation states. They cannot be combated by dropping bombs. We need to win over the hearts and minds. People don't bomb you if they don't hate you.

The problem is France has multiple contracts with many of the Arab speaking countries and they fear retribution and believe in political protectionism for the private companies This also the case for Russia. However Spain is very much a partner in the fight against terrorism they just don't grandstand when they do something they have been fighting ETA for decades and have members actively involved in the middle east conflict. reaper out.........

Both Spain and France are busy fighting terrorism within their country. They have quite enough to contend with without trying to take on the rest of the world. Both countries are members of the European Union which has joined forces with the USA in a lot of respects in mr. Bush' war on terror.

Spain has their hands full with their own terrorist's at the moment. France is just plain afraid to fight.

To Nelli - I suppose the Islamic militants only hit "military targets" right. If you throw a hand grenade at someone from inside the middle of your family don't be surprised when they shoot you and your family both

until the ecu withdrew their latest eu citizenship, no. If the united kingdom did this style of loopy element as leaving the ecu, it might create an rather unusual situaton re citizenship. All uk nationals are additionally eu electorate. there is no criminal mechanism for taking flight that, so probably we would all have twin nationality as the two uk and eu electorate, in all probability wanting to get a 2d eu passport to instruct this for holiday purposes. Having a populance who have been exceptionally much all twin nationals would create some interesting issues for the government.

Since the US is already at it - yea, they just want us to finish.

However...... there is some validity to the argument that we dont really have a clear target. Spain & France NEVER move first, especially against a blurry target.

Spain voted in a gov that surrendered to them and was bombed just after that election to show Spain who was boss, no problems after that, France surrendered to them just after the riots there, so no more problems there either
