Is dark eyeshadow a good substitute? I'm new to this... Is there a particular type of eyeshadow that closely substitutes cake eyeliner, or are they (eyeshadows) all the same? How different are the textures and the results of eyeshadow as a substitute vs. actual cake eyeliner?

Yep, it's a great substitute, I do it all the time. A simple black eyeshadow will do, and all you need is a liner brush (The angled type usually works best). The difference from eyeshadow to eyeshadow are the their ingredients. Some will last longer and stay put, while others will have some fall-off in the corners of your eyes after an hour. The results aren't much different, MAC Fluidline is a liquid type eyeliner in a pot, that you can safely put on your waterline. It stays on forever, too. But if you use instead, a dark eyeshadow, there wouldn't be much of a difference in how it looks. Just remember to have a steady hand and to wipe off any little crumbs that fall off onto your cheeks and into the corners of your eyes. ALSO, you know those Dream Matte Mousse eyeshadows by Maybelline? If you can find another shadow with the consistencey of that, it will probably apply exactly the same as a cake/pot liner.

Actually it is. Matte eye shadows are best for eye lining but frosted ones can work too. Try dipping the eye lining brush in Visine or similar eye drops then swipe it along the edge of your eyeshadow creating a paste like consistency. Eye shadows offer more options then cake eyeliner. Matte eyeshadow creates a shine free line, frosted ones create a shiny line which can be very nice for evening makeup.

Sure can. Just use a damp eyeliner brush. Cake eyeliner is a bit drier, but eyeshadow will work fine.

yes, if you use a concealer brush...i've done it before and it works wonderfully. the texture of the shadow depends on how you want the final result to be. if you're going for a smoky eye then it's best to use a more cakey shadow...why not just buy an eyeliner? btw, some eyeliners don't need to be sharpened, they are in a plastic tube and you turn it (those are generally harder than eyeliners that do need to be sharpened and those are ideal for making one smooth line, since they're smudgeproof).

Yes I have used eyeshadow as a liner. Use a very fine brush when applying. I would only use matte finish shadows. You can always try it if you don't like it use makeup remover to take it off.

You should try "MAC" cosmetics. Their products have lots of pigment in them & their eyeshadow pots can very definitely double for eyeliner - just wet the tip of your thin tipped brush & rake over the eyeshadow & stroke on. In my area, MAC can be found at Nordstrom. Great product for reasonable $$

If the eyeshadow is a dark color and is matte enough, I think it works great as a cake liner. In fact, I think it works just as well. Give it a try!
