There is a lot of factual information in the posts above me.
What I can add to this is that Disney Enterprises as the coporate conglomerate it is today was not Walt Disney's original design.
Walt originally formed the individual companies because he was not always getting what he felt was his fair share from the distributors, manufacturers, etc;of his studio's work.
For example: Universal literally stole Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from Disney, although they recently rectified that situation.
It is the people in charge after Disney's passing in 1966 that turned the company into the mega-conglomerate enterprise it is today.

What most of the 'official' sites won't tell you is that when he was a boy, Walter Elias Disney beat an owl to death. That's right. You can find it in Paul Harvey's book, The Rest of the Story.
All of Walt Disney's works were based on guilt. He may have done a lot of good in this world, but it won't bring back the owl.... Nothing he can ever do can make up for that. I don't think he ever owned up to it publicly. I don't think he ever acknowledged that he had done wrong.
And so he deliberately made all his cartoon animals as cutesy as possible to openly instill feelings in children, that they would not hurt them!!! And he even slipped not-so-subtle messages against hunting into his films, like Bambi...!
Now you know the truth. Now you know the rest of the story.
Somewhere, Walt Disney Enterprises is making a pile of money on his legacy. But somewhere else, Walter Elias Disney is wishing he had never done it.

Walter Elias Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966), was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, and animator. He was the son of parents Flora and Elias Disney, and had three brothers and one sister. As the co-founder (with his brother Roy O. Disney) of Walt Disney Productions, Walt became one of the most well-known motion picture producers in the world. The corporation he co-founded, now known as The Walt Disney Company, today has annual revenues of approximately US $30 billion.
Walt Disney is particularly noted for being a successful storyteller, a hands-on film producer, and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in theme park design. His brother Roy helped him tremendously with his work. He also had two daughters, Diane and Sharon. He and his staff created a number of the world's most popular animated properties, including the one many consider Disney's alter ego, Mickey Mouse. He is also well-known as the namesake of the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the United States.
Walt Disney died of lung cancer on December 15, 1966, a few years prior to the opening of his Walt Disney World dream project in Orlando, Florida.
