I think forst generation is someone who was born in a foreign country and immigrated. That person's kids, born in the new country, will be second generation...

One way or another, I think it is strange that people who are actually BORN in a country should be called ANY generation immigrants. I mean, their parents immigrated, but they themselves did not. Personally, I think they should be considered a "native" of that country.

The child of an immigrant born on American soil thus guaranteed citizenship, full rights, etc - - - IF THEY CAN PROVE IT - - - this is why so many Hispanics are in a Panic over threatened immigration chnages - - - families can literally be torn apart - - - Parents immediately deported - - - possibly one child deported unable to provide an AMerican Birth Certificate while another Child can produce the correct documents having been born after their immigrant parents learned the importance of documenting everything.

This is a very good genealogy question.
The web site is a discussion group about the first generation immigrant definition. Which is very interesting to read.
I hope this helps.

I believe it is the first of a family to arrive in a new country- so, for example, if your grandparents came to America in 1920, they would be the first generation, and if they are your grandparents, then your parents would be second generation, and you would be third generation.
