Unless they are over a certain age, and therefore out of copyright, they will not be free. Someone needs to be paid.
Years ago, it was 10 years after the author's death a work went from being copyright to being free for use. But the owners of the Mouse, do not want him to pass into the general domain, so they keep paying politicians to extend copyright in the US and Europe. The world seems to go with what these areas go for, so because nothing is passing into the general domain anymore, the Music and Entertainment companies feel they can charge more and more for their 'services' and rake more money in.
Instead, you and others should be asking your Representatives to repeal these long copyright laws, and change the laws so that if a work becomes orphaned, e.g. the author dies with no decedents or no company will produce the movie or music, it becomes free and goes into the general domain for everyone to use.
Why should a few companies get rich by buying up author's and artists works?

How would the movie makers get their money back if everyone could just download them for free? They would end up not spending any money on the movie and it wouldnt have any great special effects etc.

You can get free films on-line but they are all old ones where the copyright has expired. What I'd like to know is why can't people be bothered to actually pay for things nowadays?
