Does the term only apply to black people like me, or can any other race of African be considered an African American?

Why is it so wrong to be called black? I'm black and I don't see why mentioning that I am indeed of the race that I'm from is so bad. Not all Africans are black.

That term is only used for black people who were born in America. Now isn't that stupid?

No, he\she would be considered an Egyptian Immigrant, or an Egyptian ex-patriot. African American refers to persons born here who are most likely descendants from slavery (forced immigration). There is no defined geographical area, but when you hear the term African American, you are usually speaking of someone who's ancestors were living on the West coast or in the Western interior of Africa.

My friends who are Black have told me that they have no problem with being called "Black". They consider African American to be more of an "official" or formal designation (think White vs. Caucasian).

No, it'll be not accurate to be considered an Egyptian immigrated in USA Afro American ( African American), simply because Ehypt is in the continent Africa. It is referred (Afro American) to coloured people, living in USA. An Egyptian who is immigrated there more adequate is to be called either Arab or just Egyptian.

Great question, and if someone white from South Africa comes to the US are they also considered African American?

i think this term is used only with darker- skinned people, but since Egyptians are not that dark so they can't be called like this. Maybe as Arab Americans.

African American was introduced because black was to...mm... ethnic or something. The 'other color' you would call Arabs.

Good point though.
