the brakes will catch on fire... my friend did it in her 2000 bug

Best get your rear brakes checked. If there is a "burnt" odor around the rear wheels of your car you probably did some pretty serious damage. Depending if they are drum or disc brakes you should be able to tell with the disc brakes easily enough by looking at the rotors and pads visually by removing the rear wheels. If drum brakes are used then remove the wheel and try to slide the drum off. If it comes off easily look at the pads on the shoe. If rivets are showing replace the shoes. If you cannot slide the drum off get the brakes and drums replaced and have the drums turned. Scoring on the rotors of disc brakes would indicate replacement of pads and rotors as well.

How can you not know that the emergency brakes are on? The car will usually move, or if it does, it drags along.

you'll wear your brake pads down and they ultimately won't work as well. best to get them checked if you've done this.
