Well, the Barter System can only go so far.. and people have gotten lazy and not able to do as much..

If you told people that money was going to be history in a week.. and that they were going to have to grow their own food, find some other way to pay their morthage, pay for their cars and clothes... then.. it would be chaos..

There are too many services that rely on money.. and money being spent.. We don't have the ablitily to go without money anymore..

It would be more complicated with an unregulated barter system. No standards? More fluctuation in the worth of goods and a higher chance of getting ripped off.

hmmm.... I think the world would be better place with less human population. Just a thought. Less competition for the same resources.

yes. the idea is called kallipolis, and it's essentially perfect if you can get it started. the basic idea is that if you don't work, you don't live. and if you work more than is required, you aren't able to save up your extra earnings and gain an advantage over others

however, it would be *very* difficult to implement, given our (essentially) money-centric starting point

=edit=

to the other posters asking how people would get paid:

the system could not be low-tech. the number of hours you worked, or the amount of community service you provided, would translate *directly* (not through money, tickets, etc.) into your daily needs. e.g. 3 hours' work might get you a meal for your family. you wouldn't "pay" for it, but if you didn't work the required amount of time you wouldn't get it (but you'd get something else).

i'd expect that it would involve fingerprint i.d. - you'd clock on to and off from work using your fingerprint. you'd then go to a central marketplace etc., and your fingerprint would give you access to food etc.

i don't know, people will be the same bad and good, there is no difference. u work for something u get something in return(money right now) but still there is gold silver diamonds, platinum and other things that's why money was created that u don't have to carry heavy thing all the time and Gard it 24 hours

YES I think it truly would. I think the ancient system of barter was much better.

There would be less greed etc..

We could barter with objects, things we find, like they used to, pretty shells etc...

Sounds a bit pathetic now I've written it down, but it sounded good in my head.

:-(

We will have to live in this stupid money-grabbing society forever...

No. If there was no money, there would be something else similar to that. People need something to give them an impulse. What do you mean? You would actually work for free?

no because people would still use something else to barder with...in the olden days people would bargin with food or clothing to get what they want... although money would not be in existance and "working" something else would take its place...
