Why are goths goths? Whats the purpose of this subculture? Are they just trying to be sad and whiny, or is there something interesting about there culture and stuff? And why are almost all of them friends with eachother? Its like automatic that all the goths will hang out together.

I think people become a Goth because they were basically outcasts in same way. They want to be different or special. Remember that when we are born most of us were at the centre of somebodies world - our parents. They do everything for us and we grow up believing that we are special, worthy of somebody's love and attention. However, at school, our first exposure to the outside world, this starts to change- some of us get picked on, others get ignored and some, the lucky minority, become very popular. We start to realise that we are not the centre of this world, merely a small part of it and most people can learn to accept this. We find ways of adapting - such as overachieving, tarting up, doing well at sports, etc. Some, however, can't adapt so easily. I think many mental health problems - depression, anxiety, etc - stem from this realisation. As a result, some people become angry, bitter, resentful at the world, and fuelled by an over active imagination, bad experiences at school, a love of horror films, they become goths.
It is no coincidence that Goths look like vampires - rebellious mythic creatures that have magical powers and prey on human blood. Vampires are special, noteworthy but dangerous beings, something which the goth aspires to become. Most of us have had vindictive fantasies at some time. Guys often tend to imagine themselves easily defending off their nemesis with the strength of superman or with the agility and power of Bruce Lee, etc. Girls might see themselves stealing their rivals hunky boyfriend. Goths take this fantasy to the next level by dressing up to look like a vampire.
Goths hang out together because they can identify with their group more easily. They are more intimidated by others, unless in a group of other goths.

why do you dress and behave the way you do? You probably want to look nice or a special way when you are in public. You dress based on the way you want others to perceive you. The gothic subculture is no different. They want others to perceive them in a certain way. They want to be noticed. Perhaps (just a theory) they did not receive the positive attention in thier lives that they craved and needed, so to get any attention, even if it is negative, is better than none.
Heck, I'm 40 now, but I can guarantee that if goth was in when I was young, I would have checked out the scene for myself. I'm not into vampires and all that stuff, but the attire makes a pretty bold statement.

You become a goth if you love that kinda music and like wearing dark colors. Goths are not evil, do not worship Satan, are not always sad, are normal people who hang out with their friends, no matter if they're goth or not. Trust me, my best friend is goth and I'm not! It's just a way of living life that most people do not understand...

It's nice to have people to hang out with who have the same tastes that you do. Some people like to make an effort to fit in with that particular group. Doesn't matter what the group is jocks, goths, skaters....
