It's different for everybody. You'll never hear two exactly the same birth stories. It also depends whether the mother decides to use any pain relief - an epidural for example doesn't alleviate all the pain necessarily - it just makes you feel numb from about waist down. Some people also can tolerate a lot of pain, while others can't.
For the most part, it is a feeling of pressure - wherever the baby is coming from, or its position in corespondence to your body is what decides where you feel that pressure. This makes sense, because the baby is pushing to get out of you - so imagine what it would feel like if one of your organs decided it HAD to come out. It's the time leading up to the birth that is the most painful, because by the time the baby actually comes, it just feels so good to push and get that baby out of you!!
For me, it was a dull ache in my back for about 6 hours, then I went to my doctor when I noticed my back was throbbing about every 5 minutes on and off - 4 hours later my son was born :)
All in all though I'd say real pain only lasted about 25 minutes. It also makes a world of difference if you're scared and uptight or relaxed and calm.

Period pain??? Perhaps if you compound 50 years of period pain, it might come close. It's said that slipping a disc and giving birth are two of the most painful medical conditions out there. I think they got it pretty damn near right on the birth thing. Mine was really accelerated (only 4 hours), so that may be why, but even with diamorphine and gas and air, I was in some serious agony. I screamed so loud, my hubby had to put his fingers in his ears (charming).

Yeh it's a bit like a period pain x 1000 lol no seriously you are only get the pains until the baby is born and then it goes, its all worth it though when you see your little bundle. Of course you may have a bit of pain down below afterwards.

well first you feel like the most enourmous pooh is trying to get through a bend in the belly... this poo just gets bigger and bigger
and if you're not relaxed the pain gets bigger and bigger.
finally... relief!! it finds a way, only to be stoped at the last moment by an obstruction that, if you are relaxed will stretch to meet the need, and if you are not, will feel like it is on fire.
after that, you are so stunned and pumped with adrenalin that you don't sleep for hours, and when you finally feel like it the baby wakes up with colic, and so the cycle of motherhood begins :)
good luck :)

It hurts, but I was adamant I didn't want an epidural, so just had a shot of pethidine to relax me a bit. And I agree with the person above that found it extremely annoying when the midwife kept saying:" Just breathe through the pain, breathe through..." I wanted to smack her! Bless her heart, I know she just tried to make things better, but breathing in deep made me dizzy, it was much better breathing slowly with eyes closed. Gas and air made me dizzy, so never had any of that. My back hurt a lot, but the moment the baby was out, all the pain stopped. Did have a tear, and got piles (sorry, too much info but you wish to know what its like) for the first time in my life from the strength of pushing, and that hurt for 2 weeks after, but the rest of the pain just stopped immediately. It is so worth the pain. Its like period pain times 1000. But our bodies are designed to cope with that...

I don't know who told you giving birth was like period pain, but they are dead wrong. During the actual labor, you will wish you were dead. Then you will wish your significant other was dead for putting you there. And if they say you will forget the pain, they are not telling you the truth. I have had three and everyone of them are etched in mind forever.

There is a report that the most painful moment for a human is for a woman who is giving birth to her child.
No thing like that!
