Hi,
I see that you have some rather ..... less than useful responses to your question.
I hope that this one is more useful. What exams are you taking?

Persons in the workplace may be exposed to a variety of agents. These may be solids, liquids, gases, biological substances or radiation. There are other agents but those given are useful examples for the type of work that I do.
If you have to determine the concentration of the dust of a substance hazardous to health (as defined by EH40 that is available from book suppliers) you can perform "Personal" monitoring or "Static" monitoring.
Personal monitoring, as it implies, involves monitoring the individual or individuals who is/are exposed. If for example, the person(s) may be exposed to a dust which may be wood dust, welding fume solids or a biologically active pharmaceutical, monitoring for dusts would be performed. Each person involved in different aspects of work in the area would be equipped with a battery operated sampling pump connected to a filter in an approved holder or a cyclone. Usually, sampling is performed over a period of up to 8 hours at a sampling rate of 2.1 litres/hour with the sample collecting filter or cyclone located in the workers breathing zone. Shorter sampling times may be used but the data obtained needs to be manipulated mathematically to give an average over 8 hours. Short sampling times may be used where tasks are repeated several times during the working day or where exposure is likely to be high as there is a large amount of the substance is in the air.
The dust sample, if composed of a mixture of substances, may be analysed to determine the content of each component.
Vapours, gases and fumes may be collected on adsorbents (e.g. Tenax, activated carbon) contained in sampling tubes and then may be desorbed and quantified using gas chromatography, GCMS, or hplc for example.
Static monitoring requires that samples are taken at positions in the workplace to determine a background level of contamination and to indicate how the concentration of contaminant varies across the work area. Samples are again usually collected using an "active" technique such as sample pumps set to collect air at a preset rate through a filter or adsorbent contained in a tube (e.g.Tenax or carbon again).

Passive monitoring does not require the use of sampling pumps.
Solid particles may be collected in sampling trays or dishes placed around the workplace but note that this is usually a qualitative method used to determine types of airbourne contaminants in the workplace. Gases and vapours may be collected in passive sampling tubes containing Tenax or other suitable adsorbents. Colourimetric tubes are available for many contaminants.
Do not consider "Static" and "Passive" monitoring to be the same thing! Both "personal" and "static" monitoring may be performed using "passive" or "active" techniques.

I hope that you are able to find what you want in this response to your question.
Regards.
Alchemist.

Personal, as in smoking means you nip off to the toilet when you can the craving for a cigarette. It's personal, you smoke and no one buys them for you or tells you you have to. Static, means basically not moving - so you think bugger it. get the ashtray out of the drawer of your desk and smoke there and carry on working as you smoke. Unfortunately, the person on the next desk, although a non-smoker is also breathing in your smoke and is a passive smoker. Unless smoking is banned in the office or public place, they have no choice but to smoke - other people's smoke and are passive smokers and risk the same health problems - but maybe to a lesser degree. The same reasoning can be applied to driving. Personal is the driver, static is the bloody sign he hits and passive is the kid that gets run over in the process because he had no control over what was happening.

They are exactly what they sound like. Just get yourself a dictionary, (or just go to dictionary dot com) and the meanings will be clear.
