People care about all sorts of meanigless, impractical things : watching sports, obsessing over pop stars' vapid lives, watching movies over and over, and reading fantasy fiction are just some of the more popular examples. Its kind of a long life if you have no distractions. Riddle me this one : why do people troll?

no duh...however Harry Potter is so well-liked because it is another world that kids and adults alike can get caught up in and take away from the "real" world...it is like an escape from reality...people then care if Harry dies because if one reads all the books or sees all the movie, one can't help rooting for Harry to win, however, if they would rather see Voldermort win would mean the end of the books and movies which would leave people in need of something else to feed their deprived lives from reality...

Harry Potter is awesome. Why do people care about soap operas. Same concept execept one is a book and the other is TV.

Reading is NOT a waste of time - EVER.

Harry Potter is a popular trend. He is what is "in" right now. And he stays on the popular cutting edge. Eventually his popularity will begin to fade. Keep in mind that if a popular person dies they may martyr. (Elvis, John Lennon, Princess Di, etc.) and become even more famous.
