The Trojan room coffee pot was the inspiration for the world's first webcam. The coffee pot was located in the Trojan Room, within the old Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge.
The webcam was created to help people working in other parts of the building avoid pointless trips to the coffee room by providing a live picture of the state of the coffee pot.

Hi! A lot of people still don't understand how wonderful ! Web cams are - apart from selling web chats and being entertainment for the weirdo community - Most people I know especially older relatives/friends don't understand the term " free video calls " they have their computer on - but still insist on using the land line to make phone calls.. Anyway they were definitely invented by someone who was sick of large phone bills.

the reason webcams were invented was to facilitate communication between two people who normally would be unable to see eachother. Wow that sounded good huh lol anyway, they were invented so that people could visually communicate...it's just one step towards video phones and stuff.

I use mine as a security camera.. I have software that when it detects motion it will record what it See's.. I have mine pointed out my window watching our vehicles..
