I've always thought that he was somewhat limited as a performer, but I have TOTAL respect for the fact that he constantly strives to challenge himself with the sorts of roles he accepts.
Did you know, for instance, that he actually played Hamlet on stage? This was long after he had become a "star" with his early films. The point is, he didn't HAVE to do that. He could have done variations on "Bill & Ted" forever (which would have been okay with me, by the way...I LOVE those films), but he obviously felt that he had more to prove as an actor. I admire that.
