It was Italian because
- Zizou played in Juventus, an Italian club
- Materazzi knows only knows English and Italian, Zidane knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Arabic.
- Materazzi used basic Italian words so that Zidane would understand him and get carded.

I'm quite sure that Materazzi's little education means that he speaks good Italian... and how did Zidane follow? Cause once a upon a time, the great Zizou played for Juventus of Italy before he moved to Real... So you gonna think Zizou knows some Italian no...

Italian because Materazzi never played on a french club and is italian and Zidane needed to learn some italian to understand his coach at Juventus FC.

I think as Materazzi is less educated he can't speak any foreign language so no wonder if he insulted in Italian

They both speak Italian.

Zizou played in Turin for many years before moving to Madrid. He speaks Spanish, Italian, and of course French.
