It was Italian because
- Zizou played in Juventus, an Italian club
- Materazzi knows only knows English and Italian, Zidane knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Arabic.
- Materazzi used basic Italian words so that Zidane would understand him and get carded.

I'm quite sure that Materazzi's little education means that he speaks good Italian... and how did Zidane follow? Cause once a upon a time, the great Zizou played for Juventus of Italy before he moved to Real... So you gonna think Zizou knows some Italian no...

They both speak Italian.
Zizou played in Turin for many years before moving to Madrid. He speaks Spanish, Italian, and of course French.
