Is it recommended that we change the cam belt also? This is quite expensive so any information would be appreciated
Thanks

The cam belt should be changed at 60,000, it will cost around £300 to replace, consequences of not changing could be a new engine.

I have a colleague with a T Passat that has 200000 and is still perfect (unlike his driving)

Get the cam belt replaced. I believe Passat TDI's are interference engines, and if the cam belt snaps you'll be looking at a new engine. Pistons, meet valves, valves, meet pistons, now that we're all acquainted you need a new engine or extensive service. Rebuilding an engine that has snapped a cam belt, you would need to replace at a minimum the valves, pistons, probably connecting rods, bearings, crank bearings, possibly the cam shaft, and rocker arms or lifters, and this is pretty much the minimum. I'd rather yank the old engine than rebuild one that snapped a cam belt or chain.
