It's not surprising that famous writers would discuss their books together. I think, of course, that it is entirely up to Ms. Rowling what happens to Harry Potter, and since she has known how book 7 would end when she started writing book 1, I don't expect that anyone, famous or otherwise, is going to make her change her mind.
What's interesting though, is "How do we know that Stephen King said this?" The media picks and chooses what to report, and for some reason, they have decided that it is important for us to know that King was discussing this with Rowling. Why? Who cares what he thinks? Curious.

Not at all. Stephen King is a huge fan of Harry Potter, and championed the cause of J. K. Rowling for years. He's a very successful writer who understands the power of the marketplace, and knows how fans can react when bad things happen to characters they love.
Years ago, King wrote a novel about a famous writer who kills off a beloved character (MISERY) and who experiences kidnapping and torture at the hands of an obsessed fan. And while I don't think King fears this for Ms. Rowling, he nevertheless understands how traumatic this event would be for millions of fans worldwide and wants to spare his friend, Ms. Rowling from the fallout she'll undoubtedly experience if she were do in Harry Potter.
Remember, no matter how popular this series may be for grown-ups, it is, after all, a series that was designed for young people. And I have no doubt that Mr. King is concerened about the effect this would have on young fans (to say nothing of the older fans, like himself). I say, "Hooray" for Stephen King.

Not only kids read Harry Potter. Hello! Stephen King is a BIG fan of Harry Potter and has said that often. Why is it so strange that a fan would try to convince her to keep him alive? Why is it so strange that Stephen King would be that fan? Think about his influence. He may be able to keep Harry alive. Especially since she has borrowed from his work.

I totally understand. King's books are a different genre completely. He dabbles in fantasy, but definitely for adults. And King is an avid reader...of all types of books. So, I'm sure as a fan of her books and an author, he is trying to keep her from destroying the series. Which if Harry Potter dies...that is pretty much what will happen.

I don't think its right. It's great he's a fan and everything, and I'm a fan of Stephen King (for the movies made from his books, never actually read one). But who does he think he is, trying to actually convince another writer how to finish her story? I'm sure he's trying to help, but it's a little offensive.
