Before computers calculations were done by hand.. using slide rules, mechanical calculating machines or by hand. This was liable to errors. By making calculation guaranteed error free (assuming the program is correct) this enabled much more and better work to be done in the field of engineering, science and in the more routine fields of accountancy payroll, booking airplane tickets etc. Thanks to a code breaking machine computer, the Allies were able to break the German coded messages and thereby win the Second World War faster.
These tasks were done by mainframe computers originally with valves, but with the subsequent invention of the silicon chip costs were driven down and power went up so that everyone started to have access to considerable computing power. Now almost every piece of equipment is computer controlled, from Robots welding cars in assembly lines to your humble washing machine. The inherent reliability and cheapness of silicon microprocessors has enabled new products such as the video recorder, the MP3 player etc. The person computer is probably the ultimate manifestation of this enabling access to a wealth of knowledge around the world via the Internet (a network of linked computers) as well as bringing content and communication unthought of a generation ago.

Say how it has helped - think aobut 5Ws and 1H (What where etc.) and explain that. Then say the problems that have risen, for example, sedentarianism (spelling?) and obsession... Also show the ECONOMIC benefist of this thing...
