I'm still contemplating whether I should wear the shirt to school or not and I can't make a decision. I view the words on the shirt the same as the meaning said to be of the confederate flag, "pride not predjudice". Should I or should I not wear the shirt to school?

The shirt is black with silver letters in cursive.

It is not racist. As far as wearing it to school depends on how important you want to convey that message on your person to your peers. To me its just a shirt with pride full lettering that is not harmful to anyone. There are thousands such shirts. If you are prepared for the ignorance and hatred you might receive in doing so...more power to you.

If you decide to wear it I would keep my usual demeanor, wear a smile along with the shirt and ignore the jerks. Don't lower yourself and stoop down to their level by being led into any stupid argument. Walk proud.

Wear it! It's the best way to find out your school's policy on that type of "pride" shirt. I really can't imagine them having a problem with it, but schools these days...

Probably. I am all for equality and everyone having the same rights and respect regardless of ethnic origin, so it does make me a bit uncomfortable when things are targetted at people of a certain group. I try to imagine the roles reversed, so for example we occasionally see material which celebrates black culture, and I imagine how I would feel if I saw the same thing but celebrating white culture... or special educational programmes for white kids only... or categories for white music only. I would feel very uncomfortable about that, because it smacks of racism, so therefore thinking about it logically, I don't see how it can be right to target things specifically at black people either. Perhaps not very well explained, but I hope you see my point of view...

Good Q.

Guess we need to define "racist". Not race conscious.

One is negative and one positive.

So any negative is "racist".

Yours is not racist, yours is positive. If it said "whites are evil", that would be racist.

I don't agree with "black power" shirts either, any more than "white power" shirts.
Although a "white power" shirt tends to be viewed less as an equality statement and more of a superiority claim because of who typically uses it. (neo-nazis..etc).

It depends on how you take it.

but I personally feel its a racist comment.
have you noticed what message its giving
"black is beautiful"
for sure you are talking about the black people
so does that mean all white or brown people are ugly or what?

why dont you use some thing lik "Peace be on you"
or some thing nice which doesnot involve people, color, sex, racism, or bad words

I wouldn't. If someone wears a t-shirt saying white is beautiful, they would be racist.

It can be taken in many ways. You may take it as proud to be black while another ethnicity may take it as "black is beautiful, _____ is ugly"

No.
In itself it a perfectly 'clean' statement. You may provoke some reactions though. I would wear it.

i think that it depends on the rules that your school has for attire. some schools do not allow articles of clothing that have messages like that on them.
