When schizophrenics hear voices, where do the voices come from. Are they just part of the individuals mind that has become disassociated with conciousness or (gulp) do you think they have some independant existence?.

Do the things they say about people mysteriously turn out to be true?

There is an association between subvocal speech and speech based auditory hallucinations. If you place a microphone to the throat then what a schizophrenic says that hallucinations are about tend to be the same things that they are subvocally saying. The source of the subvocal hallucinations becomes misattributed to an external source rather than to the correct internal source. Suppressing subvocalisations (by getting them to day a word over and over) removes these types of hallucinatons. The theory here is that schizophrenics problems are with being able to correctly monitor the sources of information and mistake internally generated thoughts and sounds for external ones.

Likewise for external auditory hallucinations (like a noise in the wall) a schizophrenic may try to be "a good scientist" and come up with a good rationalisation as to why they hear an unusual sound. But because the experience in itself is unusual they come up with a bizarre explanation.

when i was ill ,a long time ago(18 years) after i had a baby,i heard voices after i was given certain anti-psychotic medication.I was ill due to lack of sleep, support and deaths in the family.
when you read you hear the words in your head dont you? well its like that. did not hear voices outside but they sounded real.
I think that i heard words of guidence and support-when i was at my lowest point i heard some very useful things, like "the only thing that matters is love (for your baby)" i did not hear bad things only good things.
i also had a vision of "angels"(they were human -shaped ) who walked through me ,they were made of bright light and they told me not to be afraid of death.they said that they came from another dimension.they did not say this but filled me with this knowledge as they walked through me.It was an incredibly powerful and physical experience.I dont know where the voices came from some people could say it was a religious experience but im not religious.
When i was sedated ,i had sleep therapy,i woke up and started talking about a dream that i had about a plane crash. i described it in detail-this freaked the staff out .Lockerbie had happened whilst i was asleep and i honestly knew nothing about it.no papers ,no tv,in my own room.
i also said that there was something wrong with the water in the hospital.i was insistent and wouldn't drink it.there was something wrong with it.the staff put squash with it so that the patients wouldn't complain.it was not fresh it came from a tank and one of the nurses said that my baby or me should not drink it. i found out later.
some of the staff said that some patients could see into the future and they would say things that turned out to be true.
i am not sure why i heard these voices it could be that i heard the staff talking when i was asleep or it could be the drugs? although it was a very scary experience it was character building and has given me a lot of confidence in my life..
just wondering ,have you or someone you know had a similar experience?
i hope this helps,
kind regards,

everybody on this planet has an internal dialogue, but most people don;t realise it. It is your subconscious mind helping you to make sense of the conscious world.

It is possible that this internal dialogue can take any different forms so it seems like it could be someone elses voice in which case the subject is compeled to think itis a different person.

As regards what they are saying coming true, its hit and miss. Even Nostradamus got things wrong!

I wouldn;t worry about it!

Hey, don't ask me. Ask the voices in my head. Who seem to have quieted down for a mo. They're playing innocent right now.
