The use of mathematics in solving real-world problem is often referred to as Mathematical modelling. It is an iterative process where we start from crude model and gradually refine it unitil it is good enough to solve the original problem. Computer based mathematical modellings are being used in many scientific research.

Examples of problems that can be solved by mathematical modelling may be as follows:
-find the width of a river without crossing it
-find the time it takes a satelite at a height of 10,000 kms above the earth surface to complete one orbit (without sending such a satellite into orbit
-find the volume of blood inside the body of a person (without bleeding him to death)
-find the probable maximum or minimum day temperature after some days
-find probable flood level after heavy rainfall in upstream
