The answer is yes it can help, especially if you want to move more into management than stay as an engineer.
For setting up your own company it can be very useful but you must be careful which MBA you chooses. some schools focus on entrepreneurship and could help you far more than those who simply churn out consultants. You should also consider the network you will make during the course - you could meet future investors, employees, partners etc. In this case doing a course in Hong Kong is not much use if you want to start a company in Moscow!
All in all I would recommend doing an MBA but be very sure of what you want to get out of it and that you undersdtand the investment in time and money that it represents.

Getting an MBA is not necessarily all that it seems. Sure, you may get promoted to the next level, but it doesn't mean that it's just because you got the MBA. Performance at work, years of experience, existing qualifications as well as other factors all play in. Furthermore, the cost and time of doing an MBA should also be taken into account. An MBA from an Ivy League University costs anywhere from US$100,000 to US$200,000 for a 2 year course. Whether you are willing to put in that kind of money, and study full-time once again for 2 years is not a decision to be taken lightly. If you are going to run your own company, I doubt that you would need an MBA at all. Look at www.businessesforsale.com or come up with your own innovative idea and get started. All the successful businessmen didn't necessarily have MBA's, and I personally don't think it is a pre-requisite to open up a successful business since I have an MBA myself and am running my own business.

it's a fad
you can probably get 90% of the value of the MBA for yourself by reading 3 good books, although you don't get a certificate.
in the mean time you can work, earn some money, and build up ideas for starting your own company

I have an MBA and unless you are seeking employment with a major corporation, especially amercian owned, then I am not sure that the cost and time involved has really proved worthwhile
