The better you make people feel about themselves, the more often they will want your input, and in turn want to make sure the input you recieve from them is positive.
I know a very sweet lady, in her thirties, and people seem not to be able to do enough for her. I have never seen or heard of anyone refuse to help or want to be around her.
Her secret? kindness, patience, laughter and consideration for the feelings of anyone she deals with
Being kind can influence other people as they watch you in action.
People tend to immulate positive behavior that brings desired results before they try the negative.
I find credibility is another major factor in my influence over others.

Read ummm whats his name...the real famous author who wrote "how to persuade and influence people" i got it on cd recently and some of his theories are still applicable.
