There's lots of good equipment out there, available at a tiny fraction of what it used to cost. The toughest part is getting the right place set up.
If you have a garage or basement with power, look into sound insulation. There are various kinds, and you'll need to compare manufacturer's specs. If you have a friend or two who sells sound systems (you already do, right?) then have them come and make suggestions for setting up your studio. They'll probably do it for free, as they would love to sell you some equipment.
If you don't have a room like that already available, and you are serious about this endeavor (I mean, confident that you can make it work), then look into industrial sites. On the edge of town somewhere, you can usually find a place that will rent you a good-sized facility cheaply. Look for places that small auto repair shops or woodworking shops operate.
Best of success.
