I used to break out quite often...never bad enough that I ever went to a dermatologist for it, just bad enough to really be an irritation. I used Proactive for about six months and I don't break out anymore...I ran out of the stuff a couple of weeks ago and still no breakouts. I also take zinc which is supposed to help...I can't be sure which one did the trick...maybe it was both together.

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.
Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

Most doctors and nutritionists would say no, diet does not affect acne. However, there have been lots of anecdotal reports that by cutting certain things out of your diet, acne can be improved.
Some people have food allergies that show up as acne and skin rashes. My aunt suffered with this for years. She cut out milk from her diet, and her skin improved a lot.
If your friend is a teenager or young adult, it is more likely that simply puberty is causing the acne. If the acne is quite severe (and I know---even 1 or 2 pimples can seem severe!), a doctor can prescribe a long-term antibiotic, such as doxycycline. There are side effects, of course, but they are minor for most people. My son has been taking doxycycline for moderate acne for 3 years now, with wonderful results.
Also, you say your friend is a girl, so oral birth control pills can also be prescribed and often greatly improve acne. The extra estrogen, even in small amounts like birth control pills, makes skin less prone to break outs.

Yes, junk food will cause worse acne. I no this will hurt, but you could try sqeezing some lemon into a bowl and all some warm water. Put a towel in it and wipe your face with it. It will hurt because lemon juice is acidic.
