Im a guy, and im in college.

i like the military, and fiction. i also like things that are deep and philosophical and makes you contemplate life and the such.

I dont like the overly extravegent literary books which take half a page to describe the wallpaper in a room and tries too hard to seem like a brainey book for english professors.

I dont like sci-fi or books like lotr.

Give me some suggestions. THANKS!

The perfect novel bringing together all of your interests - the military, fiction, and philosophy? If you haven't already, look at Joseph Heller's Catch-22. It's sharp, biting, satirical, and often hilarious - but it's an uncomfortable kind of laughter, which is what Heller wanted.

My favourite minor character in the book is Major Major Major Major (yep, that's his real name). He was promoted from Private to Major while still in boot camp by "an IBM machine with a sense of humor". During the novel, it is revealed that he can never be promoted further, nor demoted, because the army has only one Major Major Major Major, and his superiors want to keep it that way.

You'll never forget a character called Snowden either, but I'll let you discover why, yourself...enjoy the ride : )

The Aubrey and Maturin stories of Patrick O'Brien.

Set in the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars they follow Captain Aubrey and his friend the doctor, scientist and part-time spy and they fight the French, the Americans, sundry pirates and the stupidities of their own superiors in just about every ocean of the world.

The first book (Master and Commander) is a great set up for the series but some people find the naval jargon a bit off-putting, the author gets better at integrating it during the rest of the series. On the other hand, you can just do what I did and ignore it.

Check out The Lafayette Escadrille by Herbert Molloy Mason. Best historical account of those World War I aces.

if you like military books, read American Caesar by William Manchester. It's the best bio of Douglas MacArthur.
The Art of War by Sun Tzu is good too.

well, I love sci-fi, but this is a kinda go back in time not really space at all, you probably all-ready read it the book 1984, if you have'nt it's a trip about 150 pages where your in 1984, and society is kinda twisted...go figure, firemen start fires instead of stopping them in the name of public control and peace.....................................anyway i read it right before college so you might try it...............melissa- the bible is prety awsome too in the niv version some of the stories actually most of them about joshua are pretty good military stuff...and as far as I can tell it all is true????what do you think is good to read?

Tom Clancey
Lois McMaster Bujold and David Weber are SciFi but they are also very military.
The Black Company books by Glenn Cook are great.
I just bought Jarhead, but haven't read it yet.

Try a collection of American and/ or British classic short stories. Most collections contain military stuff as well as philosophical moments. Short stories have the appeal of being (you guessed it!) short, and are thus more to the point.

If you like military stuff, I suggest Valerio Massimo Manfredi's works, especially his Alexander trilogy.

If you like deep and philosophical stuff yet not overly extravagant, then I suggest any of Paulo Coelho's books.

You should read the hero series which include HERCULES,PERSEUS and so forth even though there are only four books in the series. It's about Greek Mythology. But then I'll just add one last thing to my message, I love watching TEEN TITANS!
