Rain is a form of precipitation, other forms of which include snow, sleet, hail, and dew. Rain forms when separate drops of water fall to the Earth's surface from clouds. Not all rain reaches the surface, however; some evaporates while falling through dry air. When none of it reaches the ground, it is called virga, a phenomenon often seen in hot, dry desert regions.

The best way to look at is is like this. You know when you cover something thats warm with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge? When you take off the cover, the condensatin on it gathers and falls into your food. A cloud is a giant mass of water particles. When water droplets condense in the cloud they get bigger and heavier. When they get too heavy and there are too many, the cloud cant hold them anymore so they fall to the earth in the form of rain. Hope thats helpful.
