You have to save money. In an out-of-the-way area, you can still buy land for dirt cheap, and pay for it over a long period of time, although you might need a down payment. Then you start building a tiny cabin so you can survive while building the more 'real' house.

It requires a lot of planning. It might be easier to find a cheap house with a good size plot of land, then build a new house on the same lot. Then, when you're done, you have a house for you and one you can rent out to somebody else!

Just to let you know - this is not really practical anywhere near where I live in Los Angeles. But I know that in the Midwest, you can still buy a house for $20,000. Over a 15 to 30 year mortgage, that ain't a lot.

You mean like build it themselves? Well, they can contact Habitat for Humanity and if approved will be greatly involved in the building of their house as well as do some type of community service work. Other than that I would suggest getting a job and trying to make a normal life for themselves.

this is kind of a long shot, but my gf gets this periodical called mother earth news. they give you the straight dope on how to homestead and where to look for land and how to dig wells and so on. several issues included how to build practical housing in various price ranges ... like under 10,000 or under 5,000 (depending on how many rooms you'd like and so on). the cost included all materials and you'd have to do your own labor, of course. all the plans are pretty well detailed, and if you've got any kind of carpentry background it's quite possible someone could pull it off.

if you really care, here's a link detailing a more cb2 mod-slash- grizzly adams-esque abode for under 4,000 bucks.

Cardboard and other debris is a useful building material. Upside down milk crates make lovely furniture.
