I encounter racism almost everyday, against myself and others of every race. I prefer to fight back by killing the person with kindness, and it seems to work very well, so much so that some who have treated me poorly have at a second encounter acknowledge me and treated me much more like an equal. I have tried to figure the reasons and many seem to be the lack of understanding of the other race (s) or general fear of them.

yep same here.. racism is nasty and disgusting but it aint going nowhere.. as long as there are a variety of skins and parents are still teaching and passing judgments to their children about others it will never leave. Only in the afterlife will it be nonexistant..
a note u should know , even if there was only 1 race somehow, there would still be prejudice.. i think sexism would take its place or perhaps homophobia ... there are always gonna be people who hate for senseless reasons... and people who refuse to extenguish all stereotypes of a particular group and drop the label.
No-one can be seen as an individual thru the eyes of someone lacking diversity.

I have a different view on this than most people do. I tell people that I am prejudice but not racist, and they say its the same thing. NO its not. I believe that there are black people and there are the N word. There are Mexicans and there are the S word. There are White people and there are White Trash (I am white by the way). It is all in how they act and portray their race. When a black person talks barely understandable and they sound very uneducated, that is what the people that only see them will think the whole race is like. When a White person has a mullet, torn up greasy clothes, people think that all white people are a bunch of uneducated rednecks. As everyone knows, that is not the case. When a Mexican walks around with their clothes hanging off of their bodies and dressed like a gang member, that is what people are going to see their race as. I do not like the people that I have just described, but being white, you can see that I am not racist. I have a very good friend that is black, and a few very good friends that are Mexican, they are not the N word or the S word. They are educated, work for a living and are respectable people. This is just my way of defining Prejudice, not Racism.

it's about upbringing and parental programing. i was brought up with a lot of racial hatred and 'dising' by our dad (what a STUPID jerk!).
when i went into the army, i had a chance to discover that those other races are okay and nothing at all like i was programed to believe.
IMO, racial dislike is all about FEAR & STUPIDITY that is passed from generation to generation without being questioned except by a very few with a conscience/heart.

Unfortunately, it is human nature to have biases. While education, exposure to cultures, etc. can make the racial aspect transparent to many people, many others were not brought up that way or have not opened up their minds to the fact that different looking people are still humans. The same goes for the whole uproar about gays/lesbians. They are also human, but many of those who are not usually racially biased do have biases regarding one's sexuality.

Bias is due to the basic tribal nature of human beings.
